Beautiful weather and continued interest in promoting alternate ways to commute drove Loudoun’s participation in the 2010 Bike to Work Day past the 400-cyclist mark.

Commuters and cyclists were stopping by the Loudoun rest areas in Leesburg and on the W&OD Trail next to the Orbital campus on Rt. 28 in a continual stream between 6:30 and 9 a.m. this morning. By the end of the event, Sterling had seen 273 cyclists come through, while Leesburg saw 172 people.

At the stops, residents and commuters were able to get energizing refreshments, pick up their participant T-shirt and speak with members of Bike Loudoun, as well as representatives of retail stores catering to bike riders.

“Certainly the weather really cooperated with us this year. It hasn’t always in year’s past,” Nancy Gourley, the county’s transit chief, said.

This year’s registration and participation stayed on track with last year’s numbers, a positive sign since for the first time the Town of Herndon had a pit stop.

“Reston used to be the first stop after you left Loudoun,” Gourley said.

Many of the riders were from Loudoun companies whose leadership encourages participation. Riders were seen wearing Orbital, AOL and GeoEye shirts among many other companies. But many of the participants only use Leesburg or Sterling as the first stop on a long trek to work.

“We had people going as far as the Pentagon and DC, Rosslyn and Arlington. They were our early birds,” Gourley said.

The first riders began arriving at 6 a.m. as volunteers and county employees were setting up the Sterling pit stop.

Region-wide, 8,752 people were registered for today’s event. The final participant count will be available later through the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. More information on the event can be found www.waba.org.
