Biking on Roundabouts: Feedback Needed

Dear Fellow Bicyclists:

Plans are in the works to integrate roundabouts in the Route 7 and Route 9 intersection near Leesburg. These will definitely have an impact on the W&OD Trail.

Past studies (Florida Department of Transportation, Summary of Final Report, WPI#0510824, Sept. 2000) have shown that roundabouts reduce auto accidents, but increase bicycle-auto conflicts. So, we'd like to be able to help make sure that these roundabouts include a safe way for bicyclists to navigate through.

At this very early stage of design, there is more of a chance that your recommendations may get recognized and included. Road engineers need on-the-ground, real-world experience to make their designs the most efficient for users. So, please take a look at the attached design plans and related link: http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/route_7_truck-climbing_lane.asp

Email your comments and questions by November 15 to Pat Turner at pat.turner2@verizon.net. VDOT and Loudoun County staff have been incredibly helpful and will help us address any concerns you have.

In addition to your feedback on the preliminary designs, let us know about your experiences as a bicyclist riding through existing roundabouts:

1) Describe your experience -- was it dangerous?
2) Did any of the roundabouts have bicycle lanes; if so, did they make the travel easier?

Please respond by Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Thank you!
Sincerely,
