Bike & Ped Awareness Week, September 12-18

DRIVE SMART VIRGINIA and BikeWalk Virginia, are working together to help improve understanding and create awareness of ways to reduce roadway injuries and fatalities. Funding for the awareness campaign is being provided by the Virginia Highway Safety Office at DMV. September 12-18, 2010 is Virginia’s second annual Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Week.

Google Announces Google Biking Directions

Washington, D.C. - March 10, 2010 - The League of American Bicyclists is proud to be the forum for Google to announce what all bike riders have been waiting for - Grab Your Bike and Go with Google Maps. Google is announcing at the Opening Plenary Session at the National Bike Summit that they are adding biking directions in the U.S. to Google Maps."This new tool will open people's eyes to the possibility and practicality of hopping on a bike and riding," said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists.

W&OD Trail Project Update

Project Schedule

  • The trail detour was expected to open in December 2009 but final construction was delayed by heavy snow and freezing temperatures. The temporary detour now has been paved from the wayside shelter near Mile Marker 36 to Canongate Drive, and from the Canongate Drive cul-de-sac to the 4H driveway. From this point, trail users will resume use of the existing paved bike trail heading north. The detour will open on Monday, January 11, 2010.
